Inside the Texas Economy
"The Spindletop Geyser"

Introduction
As you have learned more about the economy of Texas, you likely have become familiar with the name "Spindletop"—the location of the discovery of oil in Texas. Ever since the tapping of that historic well near Beaumont, Texas, the economy of Texas has depended heavily on oil. In this activity you will take a closer look at the people and events surrounding the Spindletop well by exploring daily entries from the Galveston Daily News written during the time of the discovery.

Destination Title: A Daily Spindletop Diary from the Pages of Galveston Daily News

Directions
Begin at the Daily Spindletop Diary home page.

  • In the menu on the left of the screen, click on The March. Read the article that appears.
  • Click back to the main screen. Click on and read the link titled Booming.
  • Return once more to the main screen and click on Worth Millions. Read the article.

Use what you have learned to answer the following questions.

1.  Describe the reaction of the people of Beaumont to the oil discovery at Spindletop.

2.  Who was responsible for the discovery of oil at Spindletop?

3.  How did the town of Beaumont change after the discovery of oil?

4.  What benefit did Beaumont have over oil fields in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia?

5.  Using what you have read in these articles, write a one-page essay that compares Beaumont of the early 1900s to Beaumont today. What remnants of its historic oil discovery are visible today? How has Beaumont changed over the last one hundred years? Is oil still the primary industry there? Why or why not? You may explore additional links on the Web site or conduct supplementary research if necessary.
