Chapter 19: Taking a Closer Look at Demographics

Likely in your lifetime you have noticed some changes in the demographics of where you live. Very few places in the United States remain the same, and most places change dramatically. The study of demographics is an important tool for measuring this change and for detecting trends that may affect our future.

Select one of the fifty states and analyze its population. Begin your research online at State and County Demographic and Economic Profiles at quickfacts.census.gov Choose three demographic features for your state, such as birth rate, death rate, and overall population, and create three graphs charting these features over the last ten years. Present your charts to the class. What similarities and differences do you notice among states?
