"In the Trenches"

Introduction
Students have read about the causes and events of World War I. In this lesson, students will study more closely what life was like for soldiers and civilians.

Lesson Description
Students will examine a series of photographs on the World War I—Trenches on the Web site in order to get a better sense of the horrors of the World War I. They then will answer several questions about the photos.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will be able to interpret photographs in order to answer questions about them.
2. Students will able to apply their knowledge about trench warfare to develop their own opinions about the subject.

Student Web Activity Answers
1. Possible words include crowded, dark, dirty.
2. The war devastated the region and turned it into a wasteland.
3. Towns were destroyed, and civilians were either killed or forced to become refugees.
4. Answer will vary. Accept reasonable responses.
