Introduction
Students have read that Suleyman was a multi-talented
man-a heroic military commander, skillful administrator, and
patron of the arts. He acted both as sultan, or political
ruler, and caliph, or religious leader. During his rule, the
Ottoman Empire was a formidable force.
Lesson Description
Students will go to the Washington State University Web site
to explore a feature about Suleyman. They will then answer
four questions about what they have read.

1. Students will learn more about the life of Suleyman.
2. Students will learn about the many accomplishments of Suleyman.
Student Web Activity Answers
1. Justice ('adale) was regarded as the most important
characteristic of an Islamic ruler.
2. Kanun refers to situational decisions that are not covered
by the Shari'ah, or laws originally derived from the Qur'an.
Suleyman brought there laws to their final form.
3. Suleyman poured financial support into Protestant countries
to ensure that Europe would remain religiously divided between
Protestants and Roman Catholics, and therefore politically
unstable and ripe for invasion.
