"Giuseppe Garibaldi"

Introduction
Students have read that one of the heroes of Italian unification was Giuseppe Garibaldi. An expert on guerrilla warfare, Garibaldi used his skills to bring the independent states of the peninsula under one ruler.

Lesson Description
Students will go to the Giuseppe Garibaldi Web site. They will then answer four questions about what they have read.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will learn more about the accomplishments of Giuseppe Garibaldi.
2. Students will learn details about the unification of Italy.

Student Web Activity Answers
1. The work of Napoleon inspired Italian patriots to unify their kingdom. They believed that to give Italy a position of dignity and honor among nations it must be united as one country under one ruler.
2. The Carbonari was a secret political organization, made up of members from all classes of society, that worked toward a revolution.
3. He served in the navy of Sardinia-Piedmont, fought with Mazzini in a republican uprising in Piedmont, and took part in struggles in Brazil and Uruguay.
4. Garibaldi defeated various states with a small, badly-armed group of followers, and his name and reputation became such that they alone were able to cause areas to surrender.
