"Alexander the Great"

Introduction
Students have read about Alexander the Great's conquests, which began at an early age. They also learned that he wanted to create a culture that combined the best of two great civilizations-Persian and Greek. Now they will read about Alexander's early training and education and consider how these factors shaped his development.

Lesson Description
Students will go to the Alexander the Great: The Early Years Web site. They will then answer four questions about what they have read.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will learn more about the early years of Alexander the Great.
2. Students will make connections between the education of the future ruler and his aspirations and ideals as an adult.

Student Web Activity Answers
1. It refers to one who always lives simply, much as a soldier in the field does.
2. Students will probably say that he was persistent, kind, and a good equestrian.
3. He learned philosophy, ethics, politics, and healing.
4. Students' answers will vary, but should include some of these points: Alexander's background and training made him intellectually well rounded, physically fit, thoughtful, and tolerant of cultural differences.
