Chapter 11: The French Revolution
"Storming the Bastille"

Introduction
Students have read about the beginning of the French Revolution and the subsequent storming of the Bastille. In this activity students will learn more about the Bastille and the remaining effects of this event on the French culture today.

Lesson Description
Students will go to the Symbols of the Republic and Bastille Day Web site to read specifically about the history of the Bastille and the celebration of Bastille Day. They will then answer four questions about what they have read. Students are then asked to create a poster announcing a Bastille Day celebration at your school.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will understand the importance of the nationalistic spirit that promoted the French Revolution and the storming of the Bastille.
2. Students will see the lasting impression this Revolution has had on the French culture.

Student Web Activity Answers
1. They stormed the Bastille in opposition to the Estates-General and to show their disaffection with the old regime.
2. Bastille Day, July 14th, was declared a holiday in 1880. Its motto is "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity."
3. Bastille Day is celebrated with Soleman military parades as well as with dancing and fireworks.
4. Students' answers will vary but should include several points of comparison between the two revolutions.
