Chapter 7: Empires of Asia
"Suleyman"

Introduction
Students have read that Suleyman was a multi-talented man—a heroic military commander, skillful administrator, and patron of the arts. He acted both as sultan, or political ruler, and caliph, or religious leader. During his rule, the Ottoman Empire was a formidable force.

Lesson Description
Students will go to the Washington State University Web site to explore a feature about Suleyman. They will then answer four questions about what they have read.

Instructional Objectives
1. Students will learn more about the life of Suleyman.
2. Students will learn about the many accomplishments of Suleyman.

Student Web Activity Answers
1. Justice ('adale) was regarded as the most important characteristic of an Islamic ruler.
2. Kanun refers to situational decisions that are not covered by the Shari'ah, or laws originally derived from the Qur' an. Suleyman brought these laws to their final form.
3. Suleyman poured financial support into Protestant countries to ensure that Europe would remain religiously divided between Protestants and Roman Catholics, and therefore politically unstable and ripe for invasion.
4. Students' answers may vary.
